Millions of Americans tune in to watch contestants on reality shows eat things like spiders and snails. The real life version of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, made famous by the Harry Potter books, feature tastes like Vomit, Booger, and Earthworm. Could it be that this human fascination with such foods is just the omnivore's natural tendency to try a varied diet? Or is that humans are novelty seekers, who get a thrill out of "extreme gastronomical adventures?"
Experts say that young people are more likely to try new foods, but that it's not just nature. The "bravado" factor has a lot to do with it to. And who knows, maybe some of these risk takers might be rewarded, they might find something that really tastes good!
Jones Soda Co., which started as a soda distribution operation in 1987, has recently decided to exploit this new interest in 'different' flavors, and taken it all the way. This line of sodas has been known for its quirky ads and interesting bottle designs, not to mention the wide variety of flavors offered.
Although they originally had a following of mostly skaters, surfers, and snowboarders, Jones soda, juice, and energy drinks are now available nationwide at stores like Target and Albertsons in flavors like blue bubble gum, green apple, chocolate, and watermelon.
Last year, Jones introduced Turkey and Gravy Soda, which surprisingly was very successful. It became so popular that it was sold on auction site eBay Inc. for up to $63 for a two-bottle set.
This year, Jones Soda launched a full meal deal of Thanksgiving flavors. There was everything from Green Bean Casserole to Buttery-Smelling Mashed Potato. Five tasters were assigned the task of perfecting the holiday flavors.
In the early stages of development, there was conflict between Mashed Potato and Sweet Potato. In the end, Mashed Potato won, because of being the more familiar food.
These twelve ounce bottles come complete with utensils-straw and toothpick-and not only are they calorie and carb-free, they are also vegan and kosher. They were on sale at Target Stores around the country, as well as other retailers, for between $14.95 and $16.95. Proceeds benefit Toys for Tots.
Many people were eager to try these new flavors, although some suggested a Cranberry Soda chaser, the most 'normal' flavor offered this season, to get rid of the aftertaste.
This unexplainable phenomenon does not seem to be ending anytime soon. Fans of the new flavors are even requesting Pumpkin Pie flavored soda for next year!
An Interesting Concept
"To be honest, we really didn't think so many people would want it," said a marketing assistant with the Seattle company after the company sold at 6,000 bottles that it put out on the market.
