Illegal immigration however has been occurring for many years. Most illegal immigrants come from Mexico and Central America. The border between Arizona and Mexico has been a major entrance for illegal immigration to the United States.

Immigration of people is usually caused by people driven to leave their own poverty and poor living conditions within their own countries and seeking out better paying jobs and the want for better living conditions in a new country.

Many nations which experience extreme weather, high levels of unemployment, civil wars or violence due to political conflict often experience high levels of emigration.

Illegal immigration can hurt the United States by threatening our culture, increasing our crime levels, crowding our schools, highways, and medical facilities. Many times immigrants seek out free welfare, free education and free healthcare which are typically offered by more developed countries to their own citizens.

As immigrants illegally try to sneak their way into the country they are often put into dangerous situations. Suffocation in shipping containers, boxcars, and trucks often happens. The issue of dehydration due to days without food or water often occurs.

Between the years of 1998 and 2004 the number of illegal immigrants that died trying to cross the US-Mexican border was 1,954.

Immigrants can easily find work for those corporations seeking cheaper labor.

Some immigrants may enter a country legally but then overstay their visa. Some who do not enter legally use alternate ways to get into the country such as using underground routes or illegally crossing the boarder without being inspected by an immigration officer.
