Rollins men's soccer team began their season with two wins last Thursday and Friday, but despite the similar outcomes the games were radically different. On Thursday the Tars faced eighth-ranked Clayton State in a suspenseful match that saw not one, but two overtimes before Rollins could eke out a 2-1 victory.
The game remained scoreless until late into the second half, when a goal by Clayton State put Rollins behind. The Tars continued to play aggressively, until finally they responded with an impressive header by senior Chris Cerroni off the rebounded shot of Juan Kusnir. Tied, the teams headed into a 15 minute overtime, where both teams continued the rough physical action that characterized the entire game. It was not until the second sudden death overtime, when Clayton was called on a hand ball in the goalie box, that Rollins won off Cerroni's penalty kick.
The next night was an entirely different story, with the Tars completely dominating their opponent, Briar Cliff. Rollins was able to retain control of the ball for the majority of the game, with more than five times as many shots on goal as their opponent. The Tars scored their first goal four and half minutes in; an unassisted shot by Jacob Deloach that opened the floodgates for Rollins to score five more goals in that half. Briar Cliff was held scoreless until forty minutes into the second half, where they scored their only goal. It was in vain, as the Tars scored five more goals for a final score of 11-1, their first conference victory.
Chris Cerroni's goal in the first half put his career total up to 33, which ties him at seventh in the school's history with his own head coach, Keith Buckley.
