Tennis
Rollins College hosted the C.L. Varner Memorial Tournament on the weekend of September 22-24 with more than sixty tennis players attending from such colleges as Barry University, Florida Southern, and Palm Beach Atlantic. Next up for the Tars is the ITA Southeast Region Championship at Florida Southern September 28-October 1.
Men's
In A singles Rollins' Adrian Tan made it to the third round, but fell to the second seed from Lynn University. In A doubles both teams were defeated in the first round. The Tars dominated the B draw, however, with Albin Hubscher taking the final victory from his own teammate, Bill Rockwood. In B doubles the Tars again experienced success, with Pablo Seijo and Bill Rockwood winning the championship.
Women's
Senior Tasi Purcell represented Rollins all the way into the finals of A singles before falling to the third seed from Hillsborough Community College. She earned second place after an intense championship bout. In A doubles Purcell and Marine Mahler lost in the quarterfinals to a team from Florida Southern. In B singles Anastasiya Shevchenko made it to the third round to lead the Tars' effort. In doubles Silvia Frandji and Shevchenko advanced to the championship round, but fell to a pair from University of Central Florida.
Women's golf
Rollins' women's golf team began its season at the Nittany Lion Invite at Penn State with a strong start and an impressive fourth place finish. The Tars tied with University of North Carolina - Greensborough behind Yale and University of Washington, who tied for second place with a total of 937 strokes. Penn State captured first with 927 strokes. A 313 stroke total for the first round put the Tars in first, but by the end of the three rounds of play they totaled 965 strokes.
Fourteen teams attended the tournament, including Boston College and Rutgers University. Rollins' Caitlin Barry led the first round with seventy five strokes, and ended in 41st place after two tough rounds. Rollins highest placing player was junior Vanessa Vela, who tied for fifteenth in the competition, totaling only 239 strokes. The Tars return to the Yale Invitational on September 30 and October 1 to defend their 2005 title.
