Rollins students enjoyed an 80's themed Homecoming Dance on Mill's Lawn.

An epidemic struck the campus and student body of Rollins College the week of Monday, October 23. It was not the contagious cold that sweeps through McKean on and off, nor was it a stomach-based chemical reaction to certain foods at Beans. On the contrary! The epidemic was thoroughly centered on a blast from the past with which all current students are more than familiar: the 80's.

This year, the Student Government Association in conjunction with Rollins Players, Rollins Dancers, Council of Leaders, WPRK, the Residence Hall Association, and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee created a homecoming theme that was sure to win over students and popularize an event that has often been disregarded and neglected in the past. "I Love the 80's". The theme caught on like wildfire, especially when free shirts bearing the notorious Ferris Bueller and the quote that has become many a truant's motto-"How could I possibly be expected to handle school on a day like this?"-were distributed in large quantities outside of the Campus Center.

The celebration did not consist of free gifts alone, though. The week was brimming with activities in which students, faculty, and even alumni were encouraged to participate. On Tuesday night-the coldest night of the week, as it were-the Alfond Pool became a dive-in movie as Ferris Bueller's Day Off was played on massive screen, with refreshments provided, of course. To cool off from a warm afternoon, an ice cream social was hosted on Wednesday afternoon in Darden Lounge. Things became action-packed, and just slightly violent, on Thursday afternoon at the Sandspur Field when a team of students took on our beloved faculty in an intense game of flag football. There was tackling, nose-diving, tripping, somersaulting. Much to the student body's disappointment (and surprise, quite frankly), the faculty-originally down by 15 at the start of the second half-made a surprising comeback and ended up winning the Blue and Gold Football Game.

Friday was the celebration that concluded a fun and enjoyable week. During common hour, students had the chance to compete in a karaoke contest, win raffle drawings, and receive t-shirts in a giveaway. It all led up to the party everyone seemed to be talking about: the homecoming dance. Located on Mary Jean Plaza from 9 p.m.- 1 a.m., the homecoming dance was more of a success than probably anyone could've imagined. Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Last Unicorn played on a huge inflatable movie screen, snacks were in abundance, and those over 21 even enjoyed a beer and wine garden. Decked out in their 80's finest-stirrup pants, poofy prom dresses, side ponytails, flashy pearls, fingerless leather gloves, cut off jean shorts, and more-students competed in a number of contests, including best costumes and best dance moves. Icons from the 80's represented included Michael J. Fox, Madonna, Whitney Houston, and Don Johnson.

And what's a homecoming dance without a homecoming king and queen? Presented by hosts Lauren Jackson and Whitney Coulter, the Royal titles went to none other than Sutton Apartments SGA Senate Nick Reynolds and SGA and Chi Omega Vice President Lara Bueso.

Homecoming 2006 was amazing fun. The students of Rollins College can look forward to each year undoubtedly getting better and better.
