Since Dr. Barry Kaplan was a small child, he knew that he wanted to be a doctor. He is a leading cosmetic surgeon in the Orlando area that has been practicing for 25 years. Upon graduating from Pennsylvania State University in 1972, and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1976, he went on to serve as a medical officer in the United States Navy. He completed his residency program in emergency medicine at St. Vincent's Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. Dr. Kaplan moved to Florida in 1983 for an emergency room position at Orlando Regional Medical Center and has been here ever since. One year after his move, he opened his own private practice.

Dr. Kaplan did not intentionally choose the field of plastic surgery but instead became a cosmetic surgeon because "traditional plastic surgery was only taking care of the needs of the wealthiest people, and there was also a great demand for alternative treatments like vein treatments."

The Kaplan Cosmetic Surgery practice focuses on providing safer, more affordable cosmetic surgery for everyone. The goal of Dr. Kaplan's team is to offer affordable alternatives in cosmetic surgery so that a patient doesn't have to be rich and doesn't have to risk his/her life, since all procedures are performed using local anesthesia. The surgery center also has many non-surgical treatments that can be incorporated into a lifestyle of healthy eating and weight loss, with the added enhancement to the skin and reduction in cellulite. In 1988, he started the innovative Vein Clinic of Central Florida to provide a service that was novel in the area.

Dr. Kaplan recommends getting enough sleep, drinking more water, and exercising at least twenty minutes three times a week or burning more calories than consuming in order to lose excess weight. Nutritionally, he suggests eating twice the amount of vegetables as lean protein, zero chips or sodas, seriously limiting starches like potatoes, rice, bread, and avoiding high fructose corn syrup "like it was the plague."

For diet and exercise resistant fat, liposculpture, mini-tummy tuck, lipo-dissolve, or accent treatments can help. Dr. Kaplan notes that there are "some people who need motivation and/or removal of some bulk areas by liposculpture before they can accomplish their goals." With this being said, "it is ok to have fat-reducing procedures done first and lose weight afterwards but post-surgery, these implementations must be supported with a lifestyle change."

Dr. Kaplan's hobbies include tennis and swimming, but playing with his four year old twins really keeps him the busiest. He loves spending his weekend with his children, which he considers to be the "most incredible job" he could ever imagine. It must be Dr. Kaplan's intense affinity for the youthful joys of life - of which he confesses includes a passion for Sea World - that enable him to spread his fresh and healthy outlook on life to his patients and community.
