There are many elements of the Emmy’s that people look forward to each year- the celebrities, the gowns, and the awards are all cause for excitement as everyone roots for their favorite television shows to win. This year’s Emmys, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and broadcasted by CBS on September 22nd, are sure to give viewers suspense, laughs, and, of course, an opportunity to watch celebrities.

American Horror Story: Asylum has the most opportunities for awards this year with 17 nominations.  Game of Thrones has 16, and both Saturday Night Live and Behind the Candelabra have 15 nominations.  Two of the most important and highly-coveted awards are Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series. Outstanding Drama Series could go to Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Homeland, House of Cards, or Mad Men. The award for best comedy could go to Louie, Modern Family, Veep, Girls, The Big Bang Theory, or 30 Rock.

The awards given to the lead actresses and actors for the categories of comedy and drama are some of the most coveted awards the Emmys have to offer. The shows Breaking Bad, Homeland, House of Cards, Downton Abbey, and Mad Men all have both their lead actresses and actors nominated for the prestigious awards of Outstanding Lead Actress/Actor in a Drama Series.  In addition, Norma Bates (Bates Motel), Connie Britton (Nashville), Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom) have all been nominated. For Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series the nominees are Tina Fey (30 Rock), Laura Dern (Enlightened), Lena Dunham (Girls), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Amy Phoeler (Parks and Recreation), and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep). For Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series, as usual, Jim Parsons and Alec Baldwin have been nominated for their roles in The Big Bang Theory and 30 Rock, respectively.  Also nominated are Matt LeBlanc (Matt LeBlanc), Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Don Cheadle (House of Lies), and Louis C.K. (Louie).

For the Outstanding Supporting Actress/Actor categories almost all of the adults from Modern Family are nominated, along with actors and actresses from shows such as Glee, Veep, Nurse Jackie, Saturday Night Live, The Big Bang Theory, 30 Rock, and Girls.  For drama, actors and actresses from Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, The Good Wife, Homeland, Mad Men, and Boardwalk Empire are nominated.

The main shows nominated for miniseries awards are American Horror Story: Asylum, Phil Spector, Top of the Lake, The Girl, and Behind the Candelabra.

Though these are some of the main awards, there are many smaller categories including awards for costuming, art direction in single-camera series, casting, and even commercials.  The Emmys are alway a fun awards show experience, and this year is sure to be no different.  The exciting categories and star studded guest list including a performance from Elton John, are sure to keep audiences entertained.
