Over the past few months, several safety-related incidents have been reported both on and near the Rollins Campus.

On Jan. 31, Campus Safety reported a non-forcible burglary that took place at the Pioneer building, which holds the Bach Festival offices. Days later, on Feb. 2, the Office of Residential Life issued a statement regarding “several incidents of vandalism in the residence halls involving individuals who do not live in our communities,” specifically regarding those entering residence halls through open doors without scanning their R-Cards.
Rollins is an open-campus institution, where community members can frequently be seen walking their dogs or taking photos. However, recent incidents have caused concern among students and parents alike about both what is happening and what is being done to keep them safe.
According to Ken Miller, the Assistant Vice President of Public Safety, there are nearly 300 cameras located around campus, with more being added as part of the Innovation Triangle Project. All exterior doors to residential halls have R-card scanners and/or CCTV Cameras, and additional safety devices coming to Rex Beach Hall, Pugsley, and Hooker Halls in the coming months. Campus Safety also works with outside organizations, such as the Winter Park Police Department, to address incidents involving people not affiliated with Rollins committing crimes on campus.
In addition to reaching out to Campus Safety and utilizing resources like their transport service and the emergency service phone booths around campus, students are also advised to keep following everyday safety protocols: secure your valuables, keep your keys and R-Card safe, and be mindful of your surroundings. Those who live on campus are also advised to lock their doors and avoid projecting the deadbolt locks, or “bolting” their doors by propping them open with other items. Anyone, student or not, can enter through a door that is propped open, so it is recommended to close doors fully and use your R-Card or keys to enter.
