The Rollins College rowing teams kicked off their season with their first regatta at home on Lake Maitland. The women’s team secured first in the Varsity 8, Varsity 4, Second Varsity 4, and the Novice 4 against Jacksonville University and the University of Central Florida. The men’s team secured first in the Pair and Novice 4 against Barry University and Nova Southeastern.

Men’s Pair
The first win of the day was the Men’s Pair, secured by Dylan Drew (‘28) and Brennan Duntley (‘27) with a time of 7:26.7.
“We haven’t been in the lineup for long, but we delivered,” Drew said. “I’m happy with the pair race, since this is only my second time doing a pair race, and we won that. It’s fun to come out here and race.”
Novice 4 (Men’s)
The Men’s Novice 4 team was full of determination as they raced, posting a time of 6:57.6. At the Rollins Invitational on March 7, Rollins was the only boat to medal. The Tars’ time was 7:44.1 and beat the University of Florida, Embry-Riddle, and two other Rollins boats in the Novice event.
Greydon Stuber (‘29) commented, “I thought it was a great first showing and the team really rowed their heart out.” Stuber placed first in Novice 4, second in the Varsity 8, and third in the Novice 8.
Varsity 4 (Women’s)
The Women’s Varsity 4 and the Women’s Second Varsity 4 went smoothly and were executed perfectly according to plan. In this event, the DII boat had a time of 7:37.1. In the second Varsity 4, Rollins B had 7:5.4.8 while Rollins A posted a time of 8:03.1. “I think it went pretty amazing. I rowed faster than I thought I would,” Sage Walker (‘29) commented. “I’m really happy because I did track, and it’s always been a singular sport, so I’m really happy to have a team now that supports me. I won 3 of 3 of my races.”
Varsity 8 (Women’s)
For the Women’s Varsity 8, two boats placed within five seconds of each other. The Tars were ten seconds ahead of Nova Southeastern, who had a time of 7:12.1; Rollins held a time of 6:57.3 for the first boat and a time of 7:02.1 for the second.
“Our preseason was very hard, but we’re finally seeing the results, which is really nice,” said Maria Jose Florez (‘28).
Novice 4 (Women’s)
The Women’s Novice 4 was the last showing of the day. Rollins finished with a time of 8:16.3, ahead of Central Florida who had a time of 9:08.8.
“I think today went amazing considering we haven’t practiced some of these lineups before,” Ava Cottingham (‘29) said. “It was intimidating, but all our hard work from the fall has definitely paid off. It’s awesome to have won on our home lake.”
Looking ahead, the Tars will compete again on March 28 at the Sarasota 2K in Sarasota, FL.
