Op-Ed: The Return of Avengers: Endgame

“This is the fight of our lives. And we’re going to win. Whatever it takes.”

Captain America

Imagine sitting within the dark confines of a movie theater back in 2019 to watch the epic conclusion to the Infinity Saga. Maybe you’re with friends, maybe you’re with family. Having witnessed the Avengers’ shocking defeat only a year prior in Avengers: Infinity War, you sit to watch your favorite heroes stand valiantly against Thanos again and triumph. As you leave the theater, the moments you experienced that night become etched into your memory, fuel for conversations you will have in years to come.

Marvel Studios snapped Avengers: Endgame Encore into theaters on Sept. 25, 2026. Whether you saw Avengers: Endgame in theaters back in 2019, or you’ve never seen it before, Marvel Studios decided to give humanity a second chance to see one of the most popular and influential films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe utilizing the magic of the big screen. The film was released in anticipation of Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to release in the heart of the holiday season on Dec.18, 2026. While it could seem like a cash grab, Avengers: Endgame Encore generated $86 million worldwide during its opening weekend, an impressive feat that echoes the film’s original powerful impact. Even though Avengers: Endgame is always available to watch on Disney+, the immense revenue generated so early on strongly indicates that audiences were eager to rally at the theater once more. Avengers: Endgame Encore is not simply a rehashing of the same events as the 2019 version, as it features several extra scenes and some edits that are significant for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Recently, I took a poll of students at Rollins College to find out if students were going to see Avengers: Endgame Encore, and just how important Marvel is to the Rollins College community. The results were intriguing: out of a total of sixty-nine students who responded to the poll, fifty-one percent said they hadn’t seen the film and were not planning on seeing it. When asked about whether they were Marvel/MCU fans, an overwhelming seventy-five percent of students said they were fans. A majority of students surveyed are Marvel fans, yet about half of them said they were not going to see Avengers: Endgame Encore. This is quite understandable, because Avengers: Endgame is available to watch anytime on Disney+, and going to the theater to see the rebirth of a 2019 film may not be appealing to everyone. When students were asked if they were going to watch all the major MCU films before Avengers: Doomsday releases, about fifty-five percent of them replied that they weren’t going to. This isn’t surprising, as MCU films can be quite lengthy, requiring a lot of dedication even from die-hard Marvel fans to sit through.

Students had mixed opinions. Kelsey Krebs (‘29)  said, “Honestly, I don’t have any real desire to see Encore. Avengers: Endgame was a cultural phenomenon, which is why I chose to see it back in 2019. …I tend to like superhero movies, but I feel like I’ve seen too many in the last few years. I am, however, excited for Avengers: Doomsday mostly just for the way it’ll bring people together the way Endgame did.” Another student, Matthew Dorsey (‘27), said, “I am excited to watch Avengers: Doomsday when it comes out!” With these quotes and the data from the poll, it’s quite clear that Marvel media is important to many in the Rollins College community, but that some students feel as though the genre of superhero movies has become oversaturated. This may explain why Encore can feel like a cash grab riding on the film’s 2019 popularity.

Avengers: Doomsday seems to be the film that Marvel fans are waiting for. The question is: will it be able to recreate the magical feeling that fans associate with Avengers: Endgame in 2019, or will it fall short of the mark?
