A Look at Rollins Dance Master Class Series

On February 7, the Rollins Dance Association opened the studio doors to begin their first master class of the spring semester. Funded by SGA and Fox Funds, this class was the first of many as RDA introduces a new master class series. Extending reach to the whole of the campus community, the classes welcome both dancers and non-dancers alike.

“I felt it was important that RDA be active in the spring, and we need to do something that gives back to the community because the community is so supportive of our programs in the fall,” said Faculty Advisor Robin Gerchman.

The first class of the month featured alumna Charlotte Corporan (‘23) as an instructor, teaching the street style of house dance. Currently training with a hip-hop crew, Corporan brought her knowledge to teach foundational steps and dance combinations.

“Street styles are probably my favorite because they’re the most free and the most like why we dance in the first place: to express ourselves,” said Corporan.

Starting with house, the classes and program seek to cover different styles such as modern, contemporary jazz, belly dancing, and other global styles for an entertaining learning experience. Beyond these classes are more than just movements and expression, though; there’s also connection.

“We’re living in such stressful times right now, and I think students are tired and trying to navigate a lot, so by dancing together, it brings a sense of fun, community, support, and comfort, and it helps release tension,” said Gerchman.

“Dance to me is just like expression. No matter how bad or good you are at dancing, you’re saying something when you dance,” said Corporan. “Whether it be for comedic effect or anything, you’re trying really hard, and you’re trying to say something.”

The master classes will run regularly throughout the spring semester, and the next class will be a contemporary workshop with Cindy Heen, artistic director of Emerge Dance Company, on February 21.
