AWS Outage Causes Canvas Issues

An Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage hit early the morning of Oct. 20, affecting various websites and apps. For Rollins, the most prominent program impacted was Canvas. 

According to Troy Thomason, Chief Information Officer and AVP of IT, connection to affected Rollins sites fluctuated throughout the day. Within Instructure, the parent company of Canvas, the status of various services also wavered. “We’re a little bit out of the loop as to what is actually happening in the background with these cloud services and what they’re going through to recover some of these things,” Thomason said. He added, “It feels like some things are getting better, and then suddenly, some things are down.”  

All AWS services were restored shortly after 6 p.m.
