Op-Ed: College Football in Florida Sept. 26 – Oct. 4

Graphic by Amit Sewnauth

Week 5 featured byes for USF, Florida, and Miami while including Friday night action with Florida State and an important game for UCF. However, both FSU and UCF suffered tough losses and will need bounce-back games in a full Week 6 slate to get back on track.

CFB in Florida Week 5 Recap

Friday, Sept. 26

8 Florida State (3-0) (-7.5) @ Virginia (3-1) 7:00pm L, 38-46

In their first challenging game since beating Alabama in week one, the undefeated Seminoles were poised to add another quality win to their resume. However, Virginia got off to a dominating start by taking a 14-0 lead behind a passing and a rushing touchdown from QB Chandler Morris. The Seminoles responded in resounding fashion, scoring 21 straight unanswered points with three rushing touchdowns. Virginia bounced back with two more touchdowns and after trading touchdowns, WR Randy Pittman Jr. Caught an 11-yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds left to force overtime. Unfortunately, the Seminole defense never found an answer to the high-powered Virginia offense, and a second overtime touchdown was enough to give the Cavaliers the home upset. After witnessing one of the greatest field storms of all time and suffering a defeating loss, Florida State looks to bounce back in a big way when they host No. 2 Miami next weekend.

FSU QB Tommy Castellanos (#1) led the way for the offense going 18-32 with 254 passing yards as well as 14 carries for 78 yards and a touchdown. His leading target was WR Duce Robinson (#0) with 9 receptions for 147 yards and a touchdown, while being supported on the ground by RB Gavin Sawchuck (#27) with 17 carries for 74 yards and one touchdown. The FSU defense also forced three interceptions yet couldn’t keep the Cavaliers out of the end zone.

Saturday, Sept. 27

UCF (3-0) (+6.5) @ Kansas State (1-3) 12 p.m. L, 20-34

After dismantling Bill Belichick and North Carolina in their last game, UCF was prepared for their first game as underdogs of the season. However, behind a massive game on the ground for RB Dylan Edwards (20CAR 166YD 1TD), Kansas State looked like the team they were expecting to be this season. The Wildcats dominated nearly every series en route to a multiple possession victory. UCF will have to be a more complete team next week when they face Kansas in another Big 12 battle

The UCF offense was led by RB Myles Montgomery (#22) with 119 rushing yards on ten carries. The Knights relied on WR DJ Black (#9) to get into the end zone on his one reception that was an 82-yard touchdown. Hindered by a disappointing performance from QB Tayven Jackson (#2) 12-24 with 115 passing yards and an interception made it hard for the offense to generate points.

CFB in Florida Week 6 Preview

Friday, Oct. 3

USF (3-1) (-27.5) vs Charlotte (1-3) 7 p.m.

Fresh off their bye week, the UCF Bulls look to open American conference play with a comfortable win against Charlotte. Led by LB Mac Harris, the Bulls defense should have no trouble slowing down the Charlotte offense and cruising to victory.

Saturday, Oct. 4

Florida (1-3) (+7.5) vs 9 Texas (3-1) 3:30 p.m.

In what will be their third Top 10 Matchup in a row, Florida has a tall order if they wish to upset No. 9 Texas and get their season back on track. If Florida wants any hope of pulling off the upset, they will look to rely on RB Jaden Baugh and hope for a resurgence out of struggling QB DJ Lagway. Florida fans are hoping for a miracle after a catastrophic start to the season.

3 Miami (4-0) (-4.5) @ 18 Florida State (3-1) 7:30 p.m.

A game that was supposed to be College GameDay prior to FSU being upset by Virginia, both teams look for what is shaping up to be a win with massive implications come conference championship and playoff time. Led by QB Carson Beck and RB Mark Fletcher Jr., Miami looks for another ranked win over QB Tommy Castellanos and the Florida State Seminoles. Florida State, on the other hand, is in need of a bounce back performance after an overtime upset at Virginia last Friday. This game is shaping up to be a battle of what appears to be the best teams in Florida and is promised to be an entertaining and dramatic football game.

UCF (3-1) (+3.5) vs Kansas (3-2) 7:30 p.m.

UCF looks to bounce back from a double-digit loss to Kansas State last week with a conference win over the Kansas Jayhawks. The UCF offense should have no issue against a poor KU defense, but the UCF defense will have a tough time trying to slow down KU QB Jalon Daniels and his offense. In what is shaping out to be a classic Big 12 shootout, the Knights look for their first conference win while heading into the thick of their Big 12 schedule.
