Rollins Dining Services made a post introducing smash burgers on their Instagram on Nov. 4. Christina Cabanilla, Director of Dining Services, said that smash burgers are a relatively popular dish outside of Rollins, so the dining team took note of this and began to experiment with how the college could make this dish their own. Cabanilla added that the burgers fit well with what students enjoy: “comfort food with a fun, modern twist.”

Currently, there are three types of smash burgers available on the menu: the Southwestern Smash Burger, the Sunny Florida Smash Burger, and the Tar Blu Smash Burger. There is also an option for students to create their own smash burgers. Each burger starts at $14.78, while the Build Your Own Smashburger starts at $9.99. Both of these prices also include a side of fries. Extra sauces are available.
Maura Dooley (‘29) said that the smash burgers are “so good, so much better than the regular [burger].” Kelsey Krebs (‘29) said that the smash burgers on campus are “absolutely delicious, and at a reasonable price. It’s the perfect item.”
Students on YikYak have also since expressed their opinions on the new dish, saying things like “it’s a perfect toasted buttery bun topped with insane quality beef cooked to perfection with toppings of your choice and a side for $9.99… What else is there to say?” Another post said that having one is “like waking up on Christmas morning.”
On the opposite end, there are a few critiques from students on YikYak saying that they wish there were vegetarian and gluten free options, as well as the option to only have a single patty.
Dr. Jill Jones from the English Department joined Yik Yak for a time due to the excitement over smash burgers. She has since left YikYak, but her “brief life there involved dismay at preregistration and joy over the smash burgers.”
Cabanilla says that “as long as students continue loving them the way they are now, our intention is to keep them on the menu. We’ll keep monitoring feedback and sales, but they’ve definitely earned a strong place in our lineup.”
Smash burgers are available in Lakeside’s Fox Lodge Grill.
