At around 12:50 pm Sept. 17, residents of Lakeside Neighborhood were stirred from their rooms by a fire alarm that went off in the residence hall. Campus Safety and the Winter Park Fire Department responded to the situation.

According to Campus Safety Security Director Stephen Velazquez, the alarm was caused by “cooking activity” in one of the Lakeside apartments. Velazquez said, “There were no injuries and no damage reported. After the area was ventilated and inspected, the all-clear was given and residents were allowed to re-enter the building at approximately 1:18 p.m.”

Campus Safety recently released the 2025 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report, which includes fire statistics for the past three years, as well as the procedures for students to follow in the event of a fire.
