Letter from the Editors

Dear Reader,

Somehow, we are here. It’s crazy how time flies, especially in college (something your parents tell you beforehand, but you don’t really listen to). Throughout our time at Rollins, we’ve grown from writers to leaders, watching The Sandspur transform with us. At the start of our journeys at The Sandspur, management was something we never considered, yet here we are now. As we kick off our senior year – our last year at The Sandspur – we cannot wait to make the most of it and see how The Sandspur continues to transform with a passionate staff of both new and returning members.

We started at The Sandspur as two students who were looking to get more involved on campus – neither of us with formal journalism experience, mind you. Yet, that’s what college is: a time to try new things and to branch out of your comfort zone. We believe part of the beauty of The Sandspur is its nature as a paper run by college students. As students, we are all in the same boat, juggling the stress of classes, work, and whatever challenges the adult world throws at us. By recognizing these common experiences, we can build a greater sense of community in the newsroom.

This year, that is exactly what we plan to do. Taking everything we’ve learned at The Sandspur thus far, we want to put ourselves in the shoes of our staff, providing them with guidance throughout the journalistic process. To accomplish this goal, we want to make the paper more collaborative, emphasizing the importance of each staff member’s role, as each member is vital to the paper’s production. We understand how daunting journalism can be – the research, the interviewing, the reaching out to people you’ve never met – and we’re here to help at every step. After all, collaboration is what strengthens community.

Along with developing skills for journalism, working with The Sandspur offers opportunities for broader professional development. Communicating effectively, meeting deadlines, pitching ideas, and working as a team are beneficial skills that can be applied to any field.

To our new and returning staff, we are incredibly excited to work with you. To our readers, we hope you enjoy the variety of articles we put forward over the coming months.

Here’s to the start of a great year!
