Op-Ed: Fetch: October

Welcome back to Fetch!

This month’s issue might look a little different than usual, but I promise you, it’s still the fun and (dare I say) whimsical column that you know and love. It’s October, which means it’s time for costumes, creepy crawlies, and fighting with your friends over what candy is superior (if you don’t like Almond Joys, give them to me!). So, in honor of the spooky season, I decided to go trick-or-treating–kind of.

I made the rounds across campus to ask some of my favorite people here at Rollins to answer fun, festive “Would You Rather” questions. Feel free to answer along and see how many people you recognize from this list!

Would you rather…

Q: Bake pumpkin cookies with Dr. Mathews OR time travel to the decade of your choice?

A: I’m a history major, so obviously I’d time travel–probably to the 1920s or sometime in the 12th century.

-Molly Higgins (‘28), Managing Editor of The Sandspur

Q: Get your parking spot stolen in the Rollins Garage OR get food poisoning at Tarpotle?

A: Get my parking spot stolen. I’d rather make the trek–I’m only so strong…

-Ali Becker (‘27), Editor-in-Chief of The Sandspur

Q: Get locked out of Canvas on a catch-up day OR get chased through the art museum in the dead of night?

A: Obviously I’d rather get chased through the art museum–that sounds like an adventure! If I got locked out of Canvas, I would just whine.

-Jill Jones, Ph.D., Professor of English

Q: Have your pet eat your R-Card OR lose your keys in the pillow room?

A: Well, it would be expensive to lose my R-Card, but it’s on my phone, and I love animals, so… I guess I’d rather lose my keys in the pillow room???

-Hannah Ewing, Ph.D., Professor of History

Q: Ride to campus on a broom OR take a bath in a cauldron?

A: I’m all about challenging norms, so I’d ride to campus on a broom, then maybe make some soup to share with students.

-Matt Nichter, Ph.D., Professor of Sociology

Q: Get lost in a corn maze OR cross Fairbanks when the light is broken?

A: Get lost in a corn maze–it’s a fun, seasonal activity, and not something you get to do every day.

-Robert Vander Poppen, Ph.D., Professor of Art History

Q: Get eaten by a plant in the Bush greenhouse (feed me, Seymour!) OR investigate a crop circle in the Alfond Sports Field?

A: Investigate a crop circle–I don’t want to be eaten!!

-Marisa Fuse, Ph.D., Senior Lecturer of Chemistry and Director of Health Professions Advising

To all my participants, thank you for putting up with my antics, and to all my readers, I hope you have a fun and safe spooky season, and I hope that you’ll come back next month for more tricks and treats with Fetch. Happy Halloween!

With love, Jess
